The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, IEDPU, has condemned in strong terms what it described as illegal replacement of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Malete.
Addressing newsmen at the national secretariat of the union, in Ilorin on Thursday, the president, Alhaji Yahaya O. Ahmed, asked Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to reverse the directive which sent Prof. Abdulrasheed Nallah on compulsory leave in the interest of peace and justice.
Prof Nallah whose tenure of office ends in July 2019 was Tuesday asked by the government through the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Barr. Alikinla, to proceed on compulsory leave just as Prof. Kenneth Adeyemi was announced as his replacement.
The development is being protested by the school governing council as well as the students.
On Thursday, the KWASU management announced closure of the institution citing security reasons.
Speaking, IEDPU president said: “The attempt to remove Prof Nallah while by-passing the governing council of the university is a negation of civility, legitimacy and righteousness.
“We do not want to believe that all these acts of illegalities are being executed just to punish Prof Nallah for his principled refusal to play ball on some financial matters.
“The decision was taken in bad faith as the universal practice is that chief executives of ivory towers usually proceed on leave after the completion of their tenure in office.”
He added that Ahmed’s action was unnecessarily heating up the polity and came at a time he should to be working tirelessly on completing ongoing projects and taking stock of his accomplishments in the preparation for a peaceful transition on May 29.
“We have it on good authority that the governing council of the varsity under the chairmanship of Prof Saka Nuru did not meet to take any decision on the matter under review,” Ahmed declared.
