Kwara violence: Erin-Ile/Offa inquiry panel begins sitting

The judicial commission of enquiry into Erin-Ile/Offa communal crisis has commenced sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Speaking at the inaugural sitting on Wednesday, Chairman of the commission, Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye, said the team was expected to gather facts concerning the crisis. He also charged the council members to avoid unnecessary technicalities that could delay the proceedings.

Justice Oyinloye sought the cooperation of members of the commission and the general public to ensure a peaceful conduct of its mandate.

He warned those who do not have anything to do with the commission’s work to stay away from proceedings.

In their separate responses, counsel to Offa and Erin-Ile communities, Dr Bello Shittu and Barrister Muyideen Adekoyejo Bello, commended the state government for setting up the commission and expressed confidence in the capacity of the commission to carry out the assignment.

The commission was set up by the Kwara State Government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the three-day violence that engulfed Erin-Ile and Offa local councils. It has six weeks to submit its report.

Already, Chairmen of the two local government areas have been suspended for three months.
