Kwara PDP carpets Ahmed for extending tenure of Offa LG chairman

Iyiola Oyedepo, the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman in Kwara State, has described as illegal, the extension of the tenure of a council chairman in the state, Waheed Olanipekun.

Oyedepo told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone on Thursday that the state government erred by seeking extension of Olanipekun’s tenure, which was granted by the state House of Assembly.

Olanipekun is the Chairman of Offa Local Government Council.

NAN reports that the Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday approved the request of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for the extension of Olanipekun’s tenure, which expired last Friday, to November 10.

The PDP chairman said the extension was illegal, noting that Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution stipulated that administration of local governments should be democratically determined.

According to him, the mandate given to Olanipekun has expired, while the governor and the 24 members of the state assembly cannot represent the over 10,000 members of the electorate in Offa.

Oyedepo said: “Only two of these members of the state House of Assembly are from Offa. How can these two members represent 10,000 people?”

The PDP chairman said the party would challenge the extension in the court of law.

He said: “We are going to court; we believe we should challenge it and we are going to challenge it.”
