The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State has said the operation of Joint Projects Account in the State was in the interest of the people as it is necessary for rapid infrastructural development.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buharu, the party said, the joint projects account is a product of mutual agreement and understanding by the Kwara State Government and Local Government Councils in Kwara State.
The APC dismissed insinuation by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the move would strip local councils of their autonomy as baseless and uninformed.
“For instance, the jointly-funded projects are projects with utmost benefits to the people of Kwara State. If the local government councils decide and agree to contribute towards the development of the state university project, there is really nothing unlawful or unconstitutional about it.
“The truth of the matter is that without the intervention of the state government, many local government councils in Kwara State would not be able to meet their financial commitments and obligations.
“Therefore, we believe in local government autonomy as it would largely reduce the financial burden placed on the shoulders of the state government,” the statement read.
