Korean professor jailed for forcing student to eat human faeces, drink urine

A university professor for 12 years was Thursday, reportedly jailed by a South Korean court for beating and forcing a 29-year-old student to eat human faeces and drink urine.

According to StarTribune, the former professor began abusing the victim, one of his former students, after hiring him at a non-profit organization he ran in 2013.

The 52-year-old professor, identified simply as Jang, who was expelled from his unidentified university in August, was reportedly arrested in July after his victim, a design student, attempted to commit suicide to escape his ordeal.

The victim reportedly told police he had tolerated the abuse until early this year because he had hoped the former professor would help him get a job as a college professor. He said he also had a plastic bag forced over his face and filled with pepper spray, after which he was fed human excrement.

The Suwon District Court, which was confirming a ruling made at its branch court in Seongnam City, said the accused trampled upon his victim’s human dignity.

“The former professor and three other people (defendants) habitually beat the victim with a baseball bat and other items over what they said were professional mistakes and poor character. The defendants would reportedly also cover the victim’s head with a plastic bag and spray pepper spray inside it, and force him to eat their feces and drink their urine from plastic bottles.

“The abuse inflicted serious injuries to the victim, who underwent surgery last year to repair damages to his right thigh,” the court said.

“The sentence was two years more than had been demanded by prosecutors,” the court said, reflecting, “unimaginable atrocities” committed by the professor that had amounted “to a sort of psychological murder.”

Prosecutors had however allegedly sought a prison term of 10 years for the professor, but the judges, according to the court, hit him with heavier punishment because the cruelty of his actions was ‘beyond imagination.’

Meanwhile, the three students who had purportedly aided Jang, were reportedly sentenced to between three and six years in prison.
