Kogi: Workers may protest over non release of N50.9b bail out fund

Tension is mounting in Kogi state over the non-release of the N50.9 billion bailout approved by the federal government to settle the backlog of salaries owed workers.

Report has it that efforts by the state government to get the approved fund has proved abortive as clearing agency at Abuja are reluctant over the release of the fund.

Already groups like the Labour Unions, Civil Society Organisations and Local government workers are poised for a show down to press home for immediate release of the approved fund.

DAILY POST was reliably informed that the state governor, Captain Idris Wada in his wisdom has been pleading with the already charged organisations to drop the idea of mass protests so that it could not degenerate in to security breach.

It was also gathered that the state House of Assembly wanted to reconvene to pass a resolution on the matter, but was said to have been persuaded by the governor who told them that already, the Presidency has given the assurance that the fund will be released to the state before the week runs out.

A prominent member of the state Assembly from the eastern senatorial district (name with held) revealed to DAILY POST that some Kogi politicians were blocking the release of the fund for political purposes. He alleged that the politicians have gone to Abuja to insinuate that if the fund is released to the state, it will be used to prosecute the November election.

The lawmaker who dressed down such politicians as un patriotic, described them as inhuman, merciless and unfit to govern.

In another development group of young men and women staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday in Lokoja, calling for the withholding of the bailout fund to Kogi pending the November election.

The protesters in their hundreds marched from the Police zone 8 junction through the Hassan Katsina road to the Central Bank complex.

According to an eye witness, the protesters chanted anti Wada songs, demanding the suspension of the fund until after election, alleging that the money may be used for other purposes .

A protester confided in DAILY POST that they are suspecting that the government might use the money for election at the detriment of the workers.
