Kogi: Teachers threaten strike over salary arrears, allowances

Universal Basic Education(UBE) teachers in Kogi state has said that it is set to down tools if their nemerous demands are not met.

In a communique issued at the end of an emergency meeting of the state working executive council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) held at the Teachers’ House, the teachers noted with regret how their profession had continuously been treated with scorn and disdain.

The communique signed by Comrades Suleiman Abdullahi, John Agber and Ebute Haruna,Chairman, Secretary and Publicity Secretary respectively, demanded 100 percent implementation of the minimum wage payment to primary school teachers, 27.5 percent Teachers special allowance which was withdrawn since 2011 and payment of outstanding annual leave allowances owed them since 2011.

They are also demanding implementation of annual leave and increment of allowances and outstanding promotions since 2011 as well as settlement of December 2014 salary to teachers across the state and pay those whose names were omitted from payment vouchers and those underpayed in the period under review.

The State Working Executive Committee reminded the authorities that “there can be no meaningful teaching and learning under the annihilating condition of deprivation and degradation.”

According to the teachers,”the working condition of Teacher is the learning condition of the Child.”

The teachers recommended to both the state and the federal governments to return payment of primary school teachers salaries and allowances to the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA’s) as they could no longer trust the state and local governments with their entitlements.

The SWEC commended all NUT members in Kogi state for their resilience and enjoined them to remain calm as the Union is committed to ensuring that their welfare rights and privileges are secured.
