Kogi pensioners accuse government-appointed consultant of defrauding them

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Kogi Chapter, has appealed to Kogi State Government to disengage the consultant handling the payment of pensions to its members.

Addressing journalists in Lokoja on Sunday, the Chairman, Mr Onu Abdulahi , restated the union’s opposition to the consultant handling pension matters.

He said that the consultant hijacked the functions of Bureau of State Government Pension.

Abdulahi said that the union had at inception of hiring the consultant in 2014, kicked against the idea, saying that the office of the State Accountant- General misled the state governor into approving it.

He alleged that the consultant in April and May this year withheld N40 million meant for payment of pensions to 225 retirees, and had not listed newly retired workers for pension payments.

Abdulahi decried the reluctance of the government to sack the consultant, adding that the union has no other option than to give the government a seven-day ultimatum to disengage the services of the consultant.

He said that the consultant should also be compelled to refund all monies deducted from pensioners.

“Failure to do that, the union would be compelled to embark on peaceful demonstrations”, he said.
