Members of the forth estate of the realm in Kogi State, have been asked to live above board in the discharge of their profession, most especially in this time of difficult financial challenge.
The Kogi State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, gave the charge at the inauguration of members of the union’s ethics and disciplinary committee as well as members of the Ex- officio of the State Executive Council.
Comrade Momoh Jimoh Adeiza, Council Chairman of the NUJ, described the present time as difficult and tempting for practicing journalists, but appealed to members to be resilient, and hold onto integrity in the discharge of their professional function.
Com. Adeiza pointing out that tough times don’t last, but tough people do, called on members of the Union to live above boards in their conduct, so as not to be found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
While he disclosed that under his stewardship, no member has been found wanting, he said the composition of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee was a proactive step by the union to ensure strict discipline, high level conduct in line with professional ethics and privileges.
The Council Chairman congratulated the newly inaugurated members of Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, and Ex-officio members for meriting the appointment, urging them to justify their nomination by discharging their duties dutifully and diligently.
In a remark on behalf of the inaugurated members, Chairman of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, Alhaji Sani Ademu, charged practising journalists on discipline, good moral conduct, stressing that there is need for them to uphold the ethics and privileges of the journalism profession.
Alh. Ademu, who described journalism as a noble profession, lamented the turn of events in members conduct, as some practitioners are engaging in unethical practices that have impacted the profession negatively in recent time.
The One time NUJ boss and retired Permanent Secretary, assured of the committees resolve to instill discipline in the profession towards making it attain its status of a noble profession it is known for.
Highlights of the meeting was the inauguration of the members of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, made up of Alh Sani Ademu, Mr Bola Boro and Agnes Ekundayo while the Ex officio Members, are Alh Obansa Ibrahim, Veronica Okolo.
