Kogi legislative rerun: APC wins Idah constituency seat

Mr Haruna Idoko of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of Saturday re-run election for Idah constituency in Kogi House of Assembly.

The Returning Officer for the election in the area, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, who declared the results at Idah late Saturday, announced that Idoko polled 8,346 votes.

He defeated his closest rival, Mr James Ukwubile of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 8,274 votes.

The result of the election for Ofu constituency in the state assembly was still being awaited as at 9.30 p.m.

Also being awaited is the result of the Kogi East Senatorial poll.

Before the election for the senatorial district was declared inconclusive on Feb. 20, 2016, PDP candidate in the race, retired Air Vice Marshal Isaac Alfa, had scored 34,000 votes to lead his opponents. But in the Saturday poll, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not involved as it was banned from the exercise by the Court of Appeal.

The senatorial contest was conducted in eight local government areas out nine in the district.

The areas are Dekina, Ankpa, Olamaboro, Ofu, Idah, Igalamela/Odolu , Bassa and Ibaji. As at 9 p.m. result for the senatorial race had arrived from three local government areas and were being collated at Idah.

Although voter turnout for the poll was not quite impressive, it was generally peaceful as no incident of violence was recorded during and after voting.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, who led the security team for the election, Mr Folusho Adebanjo, confirmed to NAN that no disturbance was recorded
