The Movement for Emancipation of Kogi People (MEKP) has warned Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello to desist from ‘anti-people activities’ or face the wrath of the masses.
Chairman of the group, Alhaji Yakubu Asipita and Secretary, Mr Bodunrin Olufemi gave the warning in a statement jointly signed in Lokoja on Sunday.
The group said that the Governor’s “recalcitrant attitude and refusal to have human face in the current government/labour impasse is not only disturbing but has put a question on his readiness for governance”.
“The alleged mobilisation of thugs on the Lokoja-Abuja expressway on Friday ostensibly to waylay the anticipated truck of rice donated to the state workers has further gone to prove the sinister motive of Bello’s government to perpetually subject workers to untold hardship”, it read.
“MEKP wonder how a Governor who could not pay workers’ salaries for months would mobilise people to disrupt movement of food items donated to the starving workers for them to survive.”
The group which lamented that Kogi people never had it tough even during the military junta, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to appeal to the conscience of Governor Bello.
“It is shameful for the state government to organise jobless youths for a pay to carry out such a disgraceful act of trying to prevent relief materials meant for the people from entering the state.
“The government also hired the services of some national television to cover this disgraceful act just to give a semblance of support for the government.
“We therefore wish to tell the government that no amount of pretences and media propaganda can save them from the impending doom if they fail to do the needful now.
“Go back to the drawing board and get your acts right as the two remaining years for this government can still be used to redeem its already battered image”, the group advised Bello.
The group further urged Buhari to address the issues of Kogi urgently in order to nip the looming danger in the bud as nobody has the monopoly of violence.
MEKP, however, urged the striking workers to also consider the suffering of the poor masses who for the past one month cannot assess healthcare and secondary education by returning to the negotiation table any time the government was ready for talks.
