The Igalamela/ Odolu community has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to order for immediate and unconditional release of Hon. Friday Sani who was arrested yesterday (Friday) by a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.
Hon. Sani, a member of Kogi State House of Assembly who was recently re-elected under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to represent Igalamela Odolu constituency, was said to have been arrested at Nsuka in Enugu state where he went to make purchases in preparation for the community’s annual Odolu festival slated for today, saturday.
According to the Counsel to the Lawmaker, John Adele who addressed Journalists at a Press conference held in Lokoja on behalf of the community yesterday, it’s shocking and disappointment the manner the arrest was conducted. He equally lamented that the Police had used force by firing and puncturing two tyres of his vehicle before bundling him into their vehicle.
The community complained that the fundamental rights of Hon. Sani has breached as no clear charges were brought against him. The community also alleged that information that reached them indicated that there was criminal conspiracy and intimidation . They recalled that after the elections, Sani had been arrested severally and released for want of evidence and now the same scenario is being played.
Barrister Adele advised the Nigeria Police not to allow its self to be used by discredited politicians who could not make headway in mobolisation for the election, hence their defeat.
He insisted that travails of Hon Sani could not only be linked to politics but traced to politicians in and outside Igalamela Odolu LGA.
Adele asked the Police to grant the lawmaker Police bail as he will not abandon his people whom he is currently representing at the state house of assembly.
“He is an Honourable member of the state Assembly and proven law abiding citizen who has never jumped bail. Despite series of arrests over trump up charges, he has never jumped bail all this while” the Lawyer said.
Already, tension has mounted in the State since news of his arrest spread across the local government area, threatening the existing peace and tranquillity
