Pandemonium struck at the Good Morning Market area in Aba, Abia state, on Thursday as policemen engaged armed robbers in a shooting spree.
The robbers, led by a notorious kingpin, popularly called Onye Army had robbed a victim of about N3.5 million, which he withdrew from one of the new generation banks along Azikiwe Road.
As they made to escape through the market, the gang reportedly saw a stationary police van, alighted from their car and riddled it with bullets, not knowing that the police had laid an ambush.
While other members of the gang fled, luck ran out on their leader in the ensuing gun battle, as he was shot dead.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Abia State Command, Ogbonnaya Nta, said policemen killed a robbery and kidnapping kingpin, who had been terrorising the city.
Nta urged members of the public not to hesitate to assist police with useful information, which could lead to the arrest of the fleeing hoodlums.
“Items recovered from the gang included one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, a Toyota Camry car and an undisclosed amount of cash,” the PPRO told newsmen.
