Kilmarnock’s match with Hibernian abandoned after fan suffers suspected heart attack

Kilmarnock fan heart attack

The Scottish Premier League match between Kilmarnock and Hibernian at Rugby Park was abandoned after a fan suffered a ‘suspected heart attack’ in the stands.

The game was brought to a premature close with the scores tied at 1-1 after it became clear a Kilmarnock supporter sitting in the east stand required medical attention.

Referee Kevin Clancy stopped the game and led the players back to the changing rooms when the incident became apparent. Medical staff from both dug-outs rushed to the man’s aid, before an ambulance arrived 10 minutes later to take him to hospital.

Club chairman Michael Johnston confirmed the man was a long-standing season ticket holder.

He said: ‘Obviously there was a serious health incident involving one of our supporters, a long-standing season-ticket holder.

‘We had all the relevant medical teams on hand to issue emergency first aid. It is a suspected heart attack and the victim has been removed to hospital and we don’t have any further news than that.

‘Obviously our thoughts are with him and his family and we hope he will make a recovery.

‘It is a sad occasion for everybody.’

Police confirmed on Sky Sports that a ’50-60 year old male’ had been taken ill and said the cause was a ‘possible heart attack’. They added that the game was abandoned ‘out of respect’ to the spectator and his family and friends.
