Kidnapping: Ekiti Assembly urges security agencies to be pro-active


Worried by the spate of kidnapping, the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution calling on security agencies to be more proactive in the duties.

The lawmakers decried the ugly development, urging the Commissioner of Police, Mr John Etok, and other security agencies to ensure that they end the development.

Contributing during plenary, the members called for the enactment of law that would give a stiffer penalty for convicted kidnappers.

Messrs Olusanya Aladeyelu, Samuel Omotoso, Sunday Akinniyi and Gboyega Aribisogan contributed to the debate.

The House charged members of the public to be more vigilant, security conscious and reports any strange movement in and around their environment to security agencies around them.

The House Committee Chairman on Business, Mr Olatunji Akinyele, moved the motion under matter of urgent public importance calling on the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to “arrest the spate of kidnapping in Ekiti state’’.

Another bill, which was also considered during the Thursday plenary included “A Bill for a Law to Establish Ekiti State Mineral Resources Development Agency and other Related Matters, 2015″.

The House described the executive bill as being timely and proactive.

The lawmakers said that the economic situation in the country called for diversification of the economy to other natural resources aside oil.

Speaking on the bill, Mrs Titilayo Owolabi-Akerele (Ikole Constituency 11), said the bill when passed into law would increase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.

Dr Samuel Omotoso (Oye 1) corroborated the argument of Owolabi-Akerele, saying that the bill would create an enabling environment for investors to develop the potentials of the state.

The bill was later committed to the Joint Committees on Commerce, Trade and Industry, and Environment for further legislative scrutiny.

The Assembly also confirmed the appointment of Mr Oladele Adeyanju as Administrative Secretary, Mrs Modupe Ola as Deputy Clerk (Administration).

Other appointments confirmed by the House were Mr Remi Ayeni as Deputy Clerk (Legislative) in pursuant of Section 8(b) and 9(1) of the House of Assembly Commission Law No. 19 of 2011.

Earlier, the Speaker, Mr Kola Oluwawole announced the constitution of 27 standing committees of the Assembly. (NAN)
