Kidnapping: Doctors in Rivers State embark on 3-day warning strike

Doctors in Rivers state have commenced a three-day warning strike with effect from today.

State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Furo Green made the announcement while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt.

Green said the warning strike which will elapse this Sunday is in protest of their kidnapped colleagues who were abducted this week.

He said the warning strike will be reviewed and a full strike declared if the abducted Doctors were not released.

“After an emergency meeting at the NMA Secretariat in Port Harcourt, these developments were discussed and the following resolutions were reached; that all Doctors should proceed on a warning strike of 72Hrs with effect from Thursday, 14th January 2015.

“All Doctors should return to work at 8am on the 17th of January, 2015. We expect concerted efforts by all arms of government to coordinate the release of our kidnapped colleagues.

“If by Sunday, our colleagues are not released, another emergency meeting will be held by the NMA and we may be declaring a full-scale strike,” Dr. Green said.

The NMA also urged Security operatives to re-double their efforts in the protection of lives and property of resident of Rivers state.

The abductors of Doctor Aprioku and Doctor Isaac Opurum are yet to make contact with their families.
