A lecturer with the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Michael Olopete, who was among those who were abducted by kidnappers along Ipele-Owo highway over the weekend has been freed.
According to a source within the polytechnic, the lecturer was freed after the payment of N4 million ransom after the initial demand of N30 million was negotiated.
The source, who explained that the atmosphere in the polytechnic where the lecturer is a member of staff, was that of a pensive mood due to recent death of one of its staff in the kidnapper’s den.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Femi Agagu, also confirmed the release of Olopete, but did not mention if any ransom was paid for him to be released by his abductors.
Meanwhile, the gunmen have demanded for a ransom of N100 million for the former Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Ondo State chapter Bunmi Falodun, popularly known as Gaddafi and his wife, Bunmi who are still in the kidnappers’ den.
Falodun and his wife were also among those that fell victims of the kidnappers over the weekend on the Owo-Akoko highway while returning from a social function.
A family source confirmed to DAILY POST that the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded that N100 million ransom be paid before they can be released.
NULGE chairman in the state, Comrade Taiwo Bola, confirmed that the family had been contacted but did not disclose the amount demanded as ransom for the release of his member.
Comrade Bola, however, said negotiation with the kidnappers was still ongoing and assured that “hopefully things will be sorted out as soon as possible, so that Gaddafi and his family members can regain their freedom.”
