The Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh has lashed out at National Assembly members from the South-East geo-political zone for keeping quiet over the continued incarceration of the Director of Radio Biafra and Leader, Indigenous People of Biafra, POB, Nnamdi Kanu by the Department of State Services, DSS.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had on December 17 ordered the Department Of State Services, DSS, to immediately effect the unconditional release of the embattled Operator of Radio Biafra.
The Justice Adeniyi Ademola-led Federal High Court held that the continued incarceration of Kanu the DSS was unlawful.
But rather than release Kanu, the Federal Government proceeded to a Federal High Court in Abuja to prefer six fresh charges against him alongside Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi of IPOB.
The charge-sheet, which was signed by the Director, Public Prosecution (DPP), Mohammed Saidu Diri, for the Attorney-General of the Federation, indicates that Kanu and the two others were charged with treasonable felony which is punishable under Section 41(C) of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Kanu on Wednesday appeared before a Federal High Court presided over by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, who exempted himself from the fresh six-count charges filled against the embattled Director of Radio Biafra by the Nigerian government.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed made this disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja after Kanu objected to the case.
Mohammed said that it was needless, as the federal government had repeatedly disobeyed previous court rulings.
But speaking with Vanguard, Umeh lambasted the federal lawmakers from the South-East, stressing that in the face of Biafra’s agitation, “Our National Assembly members should have advised the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu first and then intervene in the dispute to ensure that frayed nerves are calmed on the issue, instead of keeping silent while the agitation is escalating.”
