The Kano State Government has set up a 19-member committee to monitor activities at government and private boarding schools in the state.
Inaugurating the committee on Wednesday, the state’s Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, said the government raised the committee because of some disturbing happenings in the schools.
He said “government is worried about the disturbing situation in some boarding schools, hence the decision to constitute the committee.’’
He added that following frequent fire outbreaks in boarding schools across the state, it became pertinent to set up the committee to look into usage of electrical appliances and cooking stoves in the dormitories, with a view to averting future occurrences.
According to him, the committee is expected to examine students’ dormitory accommodation ratio and determine whether it conforms with the government’s guidelines.
He urged the committee to examine teachers’ supervision role after school hours and the involvement of students in extracurricular activities.
“The committee is saddled with the responsibility of ascertaining the level of security provision in schools with a view to determining its adequacy or otherwise,’’ he noted.
Responding, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Umar Kankarofi, thanked the state government for giving them the opportunity to serve the state. (NAN)
