The Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) on Wednesday stated that it had generated N217 million as revenue in 2014.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agency was established by the state government to assist traffic wardens in ensuring smooth flow of traffic, particularly in the state capital.
Alhaji Musa Babani, the Deputy Managing Director of the Agency, told NAN in an interview that the amount was made up of fines collected from violators of road traffic rules.
According to him, the agency has arrested a total of 85,000 persons for different road traffic offences, ranging from illegal parking; abuse of stop line; receiving phone calls while driving as well as over loading.
‘’Five cars have been in our custody for illegal parking for the past seven months and we are yet to identify their owners,” the deputy managing director said.
He also disclosed that the state government had recently offered 1,500 Road Traffic Assistants permanent and pensionable appointment.
‘’The gesture is part of the state government’s efforts to empower the youths to reduce unemployment among them,” he said.
He said arrangements had also been completed to train some of the Road Traffic Assistants to enable them discharge their duties efficiently.
He said the training which would commence before the end of the month, was aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills for the job.
According to him, the agency has been able to check the excesses of some motorists in the state capital as it has drastically reduced non-compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
‘’The number of road traffic offenders being arrested on daily basis has also reduced, particularly in the state capital,’’ Babani said.
