Kano Mass Wedding: State Govt drops 20 women for testing positive to HIV


Kano State Government said it has dropped 25 women who were part of the 1000 couples expected to join in the now famous mass wedding about holding for the third time in the state. This edition is undoubtedly the third in the series.

The government attributed the development to the discovery that 5 out the 1000 were tested positive to pregnancy, while 20 tested positive to HIV/Aids.

Commander-General of the Hisbah Board in Kano, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa noted that in Islam, it was taboo for pregnant women to participate in wedding ceremonies.

According to him, wedding prayer session for 21 couples would be held in each of the 44 councils. Mass wedding for the remaining 76 couples would be conducted in the state capital.

DailyPost gathered that the Board has earmarked a total of N10 million for bride price to the brides.

Businessman, Alhaji Isiyaka Rabiu and the Governor of the Central Bank (CBN), Sunusi Lamido Sanusi donated N2 million and N1 million respectively in their personal capacity.

In addition, Alhaji Gambo Danpass, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Kano, donated 200 bundles of lace material for the participants.

On its part, telecommunication company, Globacom had donated 2, 000 sim cards for distribution to the couples.
