The Kano State Government, Friday, announced the sacking of about 2,620 street sweepers.
The sacked street sweepers were employed by the state’s Refuse Management and Sanitation Board.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner of information, Alhaji Muhammad Garba, while speaking with journalists after the weekly state executive council meeting in Kano, adding that the decision followed government’s resolve to curb unnecessary expenditure.
According to Garba, the state government was spending not less than N26.2m every month to pay the 2,620 sweepers as each worker collects a monthly allowance of N10, 000, just as most of them did not report for work.
He further explained that the termination of their appointments would pave way for probity and accountability in the board, adding that the state government has also revoked the allocation of shops to individuals within the vicinity of the Sani Abacha Stadium by the administration of former Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
“The state government noted with dismay that those corner shops within the Sani Abacha Stadium were not in line with public interest and henceforth revoked it,” Garba said.
