There are ongoing reports that Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State on Friday anointed his Deputy, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as his successor. The endorsement of Ganduje was perfected by Kwankwaso around 2am during a stakeholders meeting held at the Kano State Government House.
Daily Trust reports that Kwankwaso told the meeting attended by stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state that Ganduje was his candidate for the 2015 election in the state. This is unusual in Nigerian politics as most state governors would rather work against their Deputy succeeding them as governor.
The 64-year old Ganduje has been with Kwankwaso since 1999. Together, they staged a comeback in 2011 after they were defeated in the 2003 governorship election.
One of the Governor’s aides confirmed Kwankwaso’s endorsement of Ganduje.
Checks revealed that should the present Deputy Governor win the general election, he will become the second Deputy Governor to succeed his boss. The first was Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi of Zamfara state who succeeded his boss, Ahmed Sani Yarima Bakura in 2007. However, it was only months before they fell apart that Shinkafi eventually decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the newspaper, other aspirants jostling for the APC governorship in the state have been compensated with other positions.
