Kaduna primary, secondary pupils protest El-Rufai move to sack teachers

Primary school pupils in some local government areas of Kaduna State on Tuesday took to the streets, protesting the State government’s intention of sacking more than 21,000 primary school teachers across the state who were said to have failed the competency test conducted by the state recently.

Reports from Zaria has it that the pupils from Sabon Gari and Zaria local government areas while in Sabon Tasha in Chikun local government area of the state took to the streets in their hundreds carrying leaves saying ‘Ba maso’ meaning ‘they don’t want the planned sacking of their teachers’.

Most of them interviewed said they were against the state government’s decision to sack the alleged teachers that failed the competency test.

They suggested that instead of sacking the teachers alleged to have failed the competency test, they should be trained for better productivity, stressing that most of them have put more years in the service of the state.

Others noted that sacking the teachers now in their thousands would not be a welcome development looking at the hardship most families are passing through.

They pleaded with governor El-Rufai to evolve ways through training to enhance the quality of teaching in public schools in the state, pointing out that if given a better working environment and a better pay package, the teachers would be better of.
