A Leading opposition party in the country, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), on Saturday proved it was a platform to reckon with as it caused an upset in Kaduna State local government elections.

Its candidate for the Kaduna North local council, Samaila Suleiman, a relatively unknown politician in his mid-thirties, defeated Vice President Namadi Sambo’s protege, Bala Gogo of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), in a keenly contested poll.

The result stunned associates of the VP who had thought the contest would be a walkover, believing their strong financial backing and political links would ensure victory.

The CPC however, banked heavily on grassroots support, as they were said to have mobilized party members who campaigned rigorously for the eventual victory.

Sambo has been widely criticised for being a weak politician with no solid grip on his constituency and state at large.

A similar episode occurred in the 2011 general elections, as Sambo lost to the CPC in all the elections, including the presidential battle.

The Vice President was reportedly out of the country during the elections and is yet to comment on why he could not deliver his local government to the ruling party.
