Ordinarily, I would not want to talk on the issue of homosexuality (Sodomy and Lesbianism) because it is, to me at least, such a shameful subject to discuss, especially as it is such an obvious perversion that it has been described in our statute books and other literature as an “unnatural offence”.
However, I have decided to make a u-turn to discuss the issue because it bothers me that within my neighborhood (at Olodi – Apapa, Lagos) a Lesbian club seems to hold sway despite the country’s laws abolishing such same sex practices and groups.
These lesbians meet during the unholy hours of the night at a Bar/Saloon owned by their coordinator, popularly called Aunty.
Their nocturnal activities have been a cause of disturbance in the neighborhood, often interrupting the peaceful sleep of residents.
In the absence of police restraint against their meetings, the residents are now thinking of securing the services of ‘OPC vigilante group’ in order to curb the clandestine activities of these lesbians.
It is my wish and those of other residents that the Bar/Saloon should be shut down and its owner made to face the consequences of practicing, encouraging and sponsoring lesbianism as prescribed under the laws of Nigeria.
I am aware that new laws have been enacted and embodied in the constitution against this vice to strengthen the pre-existing penal code and sharia code spelling out punishment against those who commit same sex sexual intercourse a and related offences.
Therefore, let us all join hands with the government to condemn the growing indulgence in this vice.
All religions condemn it, so also does out culture. Teachings of the Bible calls it a “very grievous sin” (Genesis, 18:20) and describes it as being the cause of the Divine wrath and destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The Holy Quran requires us to raise our voice against all evils. It condemns the Israelites of the pre-Islamic period thus: “They forbade not one another the hateful things they did. Evil indeed was what they did” (5:79). And it was one of the reasons why the then Israelites were cursed “on the tongue of David and Jesus” (5:78). In the last resort, it is not the public opinion, nor the legal consequences, which can put an end to these evils, but a living faith in a Living God that can restrain people from all evils.
