The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has pledged Government’s commitment to comply with the Jan. 13, 2014 judgment granting financial autonomy to the judiciary.
Anyim made the pledge at a meeting with the National Executive Council of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Abuja on Monday
Anyim said monitoring committees would be set up to ensure compliance with the judgment at both federal and state levels.
He said that members of the committees would be drawn from the SGF’s office, states, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Office of the Chief Registrars of Courts (CRs), NLC and JUSUN.
He said the committees would be headed by Chairmen of NBA in states while the Chief Registrars in states would serve as secretaries.
He commended JUSUN for fighting for the future of the judiciary in the country.
Mr Augustine Alegeh (SAN), the President of NBA, commended JUSUN for taking action in the interest of the entire judiciary.
“I want to say that the strike by JUSUN is unusual; JUSUN did not go on strike to seek increase of salaries but to enforce compliance to court judgment.
“The action is commendable because it is not for personal gain but for the benefit of the whole judiciary system to be well funded and we will continue to support them”, he said.
Earlier, the President of JUSUN, Marwan Adamu, told newsmen that the NEC decided to suspend the strike in Federal High Courts following FG’s commitment to comply with the judgment.
“The NEC met yesterday and today, we reviewed the situation and we have agreed that in the interest of the nation, the strike in all the federal courts is hereby suspended.
“All the workers at the federal courts are directed to resume work immediately.’’ Adamu, however, said the strike would continue in the states due to lack of commitments to comply with the judgment by the state governments.
He said that the chairmen of JUSUN in the states were willing to receive any form of commitment by their states subsequent upon which they would also suspend the strike. NAN
