A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ,Tuesday fixed June 17 to commence hearing on a suit brought before it against the Senate Minority Leader and former Governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume, over alleged certificate forgery.
The case was instituted against Akume by Phillip Agbese, an indigene of Benue.
Agbese alleged that the academic credentials used by Akume to secure governorship position in Benue between 1999-2007 were questionable.
According to him, Akume used the same credentials to win the election that brought him to the Senate.
Other respondents in the suit are West Africa Examination Council, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and the Attorney General of the Federation.
When the case came up on Tuesday, Justice A.R Mohammed said, “Gentlemen, the matter was slated for hearing today, but I understand both parties are still preparing.
“The court shall however tolerate parties for one more time after which no frivolous adjournment shall be granted.
Parties are enjoined to turn in their processes and to serve those who are supposed to be served for us to move forward. The matter is hereby adjourned to June 17 for hearing.’’
Mr Sebastine Hom (SAN), counsel to Akume, said the counsel to the plaintiff, Amobi Nzelu, served him with the originating summons three days earlier.
Hom said he needed time to study the process before filing the brief of arguments and to raise objections.
