June 12: Yobe govt cancels Democracy Day celebration

As States across the federation Wednesday celebrate June 12 as the maiden National Democracy Day, Yobe state is instead of an open celebration to mark the day, planning a special prayer session tomorrow for peace, tranquillity and progress of the state and the country in general, DAILY POST has learnt.

The prayer session is expected to take place at the Yobe Mosque and Islamic Centre Damaturu, where the state Governor, Mai Mala Buni, his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, political office holders including the new Senate president, renowned Islamic scholars, caretaker chairmen of the 17 local government areas, traditional rulers among others would be in attendance.

The Chairman, publicity sub committee for the inauguration of the Executive Governor of Yobe state, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni and the 2019 democracy day celebration, Alhaji Mala Musti had in a statement, announced adjustment to earlier activities lined up for the 2019 Democracy Day celebration.

“Consequent upon this development, prayer sessions for peace, tranquillity and progress of the state and the country, in general, will be held on 12th June, 2019 at the Yobe Mosque and Islamic Centre, Damaturu as well as all the local government councils of the state.

“In that regard, people of the state are therefore enjoined to pray for lasting peace, security and bumper harvest in the state and the nation as a whole,” the statement read in part.

DAILY POST observed that in Damaturu and elsewhere around the state, people especially at the informal sector, were going about their normal activities, while the formal sector of the economy was inactive due to the one-day public holiday declared by the federal government to mark the 2019 democracy day.
