General Mohammed Shuwa
Barely 24 hours after the Boko Haram sects gave another condition for ceased fire in the crises torn Borno state, residents of Gwange ward in Maiduguri, Borno state capital were thrown into confusion following the killing of a former military General and veteran of the Nigerian Civil war, General Mamman Shuwa (rtd) at his Gwange resident by suspected members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
General Shuwa who fought the Nigerian Civil War and won many medals for his gallantry was said to have been killed alongside his guest on Friday in Maiduguri.
A resident of Gwange on phone told Daily Post that following the killings of over 40 persons in Maiduguri, it was rumoured that the sect members’ have vowed to revenge the death of their members.
According to him, “We heard gunshots and as usual, we waited with prayers at home until the sound of gunshots died down. When we came out, we saw people gathered and we were told that they killed the General. I was shocked and ask ‘how?’ because I know that there is a military post close to his house. We left however, almost immediately before the soldiers came to cordon off the area.”
Confirming the incident, spokesman of the JTF on phone, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said at about 12 noon on Friday, the General was seated with some guests in his house at Gwange 1 area of Maiduguri metropolis, when four men initially thought to be his visitors and guests for the Juma at prayers entered.
According to JTF, the gunmen opened fire at the General and his guests. “One of the guests died on the spot while the General died on the way to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”
The statement also explained that, “the JTF troops located in the area immediately cordoned off the area as search for the assailants is ongoing”
While urging citizens to bring forth information that will assist the security agencies to apprehend the terrorists, the statement also assured that, the terrorists who carried out the killing of the late General would be brought to book.
