Journalists in Anambra State have been advised to use their reports to contribute to the enthronement of a good governor in the state.
Professor Ike Ndolo of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, in a lecture he delivered to mark the beginning of the Press Week for journalists in Anambra State, entitled “Achebe as a Writer”, said journalists must be upright people who must tell the truth at all times.
Ndolo said Achebe as a writer used the instrument of his writing to attempt to change Nigeria and the world, and even in the face of criticism remained undaunted to the extent of publishing a book “There Was A Country” just months before his death.
Also, Prof Ken Nworgu, the former dean of Faculty of law in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, urged journalists to live above board by always going out for investigative story that would expose ills in the society.
Nworgu blamed media practitioners partly for the decay in the country, saying that the media had rather that hold corrupt leaders to task aligned with them with the hope of getting gratification.
Earlier in his remark, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Comrade Henry Nwasike told guests to the function that the press week was usually a time set aside by media practitioners to appraise their journey for a particular year.
He said it was also a week in which the journalists took time off news hunting to interact among themselves.
The Press week in Anambra State, which started with an outing service at St Patrick Catholic Cathedral will continue until the end of the week with several other activities including Novelty match, facility tour and award presentation among others.
