The Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson on Thursday said only former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should be thanked for conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election.
Governor Dickson said the decision made by Jonathan changed the political history of Nigeria.
According to him, the call placed across to President Buhari by Jonathan averted anarchy.
Dickson made these observations when Jonathan received the award of ‘Person of the Year 2015’ from the Leadership Newspaper.
Dickson in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the award was well deserving of the former President, adding that the singular action of accepting defeat puts him miles apart from other leaders, within the African continent and beyond.
He also used the opportunity to call on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to always accord Jonathan the respect and honour of a true statesman that he is, while also calling on him to always stand up and show leadership.
According to him, “democrats all over the world would continue to appreciate him for his exceptional display of sportsmanship in the 2015 election as an incumbent president.”
“Dickson believes that the action taken by Jonathan saved thousands of lives that would have been lost and kept the unity of Nigeria intact, particularly against the backdrop of predictions of the nation’s disintegration.
He should be thanked for accepting defeat even when he had all the chance to act otherwise,” the state added.
Meanwhile, governor Dickson has affirmed that the state government does not have the capacity to pay civil servants in the state because of dwindling revenue.
