A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government’s order for the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen to immediately vacate his office.
The Federal Government will on Monday, January 14, 2019, arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.
The charges against Justice Onnoghen were filed and served on him on Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal. Reacting, Omokri said the move was aimed at manipulating the judiciary because Buhari will lose the forthcomong election.
In a post on his Facebook page, Omokri wrote: “My attention is drawn to the imminent arrest and charges against the Chief Justuce of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, by the Buhari government, 4 weeks to an election they are likely to lose and which may end up in court.
“This is very suspicious. The judiciary is a self governing and independent arm of government according to the 1999 Constitution. The Buhari government has no business pressuring justice Onnoghen to resign when he has not been convicted.
“He is innocent until proven guilty. Neither President Buhari nor the EFCC called for the resignation of Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano state, who was caught redhanded receiving bribes. Rather, Buhari publicly praised him in Paris after the disgraceful act of bribery. President Buhari NEVER wanted Justice Onnoghen as CJN and refused to appoint him and left him acting until he was sworn in by then acting President Osinbajo.
“The main cabal ruling Nigeria for PMB NEVER wanted Justice Onnoghen in the first place. Buhari is known for manipulating the law against the heads of independent arms of government he considers unfriendly to him. A good example is his malicious prosecution and persecution of Senate President Bukola Saraki which failed in court #LeaveJusticeOnnoghenAlone.”
