Jonathan never asked me to step down for Gemade – Suswam

Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, has reiterated his desire to become the next senator for Benue North East.

He debunked reports that President Goodluck Jonathan ordered him to withdraw as automatic ticket had already been granted to the incumbent, Barnabas Andyar Gemade, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Suswam, during a thanksgiving mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Adikpo in Kwande local government area, said: “There are speculations and media reports that the president held a meeting with us and ordered me to withdraw from the race and that the incumbent was given automatic ticket.

“That is a total lie; it is completely fake.

“You people should not be deceived because I am fully in the race and you people are the ones clamouring to vote for me overwhelmingly”, Suswam stated.

He said the ruling PDP was a viable party, committed to ensuring rapid development as evidenced by the monumental achievements of his administration, stating that the party would not split but remain united to foster progress in the country.

On the emergence of a governorship candidate, Suswam said he had provided a level playing field for all aspirants to seek the mandate, noting that he alone as governor could not anoint a candidate.

He added that he would only back someone endorsed by majority of the electorates, including the traditional institution, who they believe will rule the state in accordance with the wishes of the generality of the people.
