The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday stated that no civilian government had done so much for the North like President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Chief Oliseh Metuh, said “I believe that people of the North know that this government has been fair to them. Our confidence is because of the attention we paid to the North.

“In 2011, not much of what Jonathan has done could be seen there, but three years down the line, they have seen what he has been able to do for the North and the North has benefited so much. The North has been impressed with our policies.”

PDP said that the problem of the North East was not caused by this administration, adding “If not for the character and candour of President Goodluck Jonathan on Boko Haram, the insurgents would have overrun half of Nigeria.”

On PDP campaigns which appear to focus on Buhari rather than issues, the spokesman stated that the party has for three weeks been publishing issues-based campaigns.

“Sometimes, some people think they have the prerogative of attacking people. If some people decide to pay them back in their own coins, APC should not be crying. For four years, they have insulted our president and we have only raised one or two issues and now, they are complaining,” Metuh said.

On the activities of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the affairs of the party, Metuh stated that PDP still has “huge respect for Obasanjo,” recalling also that it made him president.

He noted also that the PDP campaign was based on the performance of the party in the last 16 years which included the time Obasanjo presided over the country.

“We will continue to engage him in our activities. PDP appreciates the support of the former president,” he said.

On the members who defected because of the primaries conducted by the party, he said “‎we had issues with that because, there were people who felt they could win the primaries but some did not handle it well after they lost. But we know from the benefit of experience that this party will make corrections on how we handle people that have defected.‎

“There is no way we can sit down and see people leave our party and be happy. But there is ‎room for improvement and we are leaning. We did not set out to see them leave”.
