JOHESU strike: UPTH secures services of Red Cross

The management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, has concluded plans to contract external professional staff and Red Cross to make-up for the non availability of health workers in the Hospital.

Chief Medical Director of UPTH, Professor Henry Ugboma disclosed this at a media briefing in Port Harcourt.

Prof. Ugboma said the strike embarked upon by Medical health workers was taking its toll on the affairs of the institution.

He added that the management had to consider using the Red Cross in other to keep the operations running.

“In our response to take far reaching measures to ensure that whatever services we render remains effective towards addressing the healthcare needs of members of the public, to this end after periodic review of our activities, management resolved to expand the scope of service delivery by engaging in-personnel from the Red Cross and ad hoc staff.

“This is to make sure that what we are doing remains effective,” he said.

In the meantime, leader of the Joint Health Sector Union in Rivers state, Dr. Chris Mbata warned that the CMD of UPTH risked being dragged to court if goes ahead to contract in-personnel of Red Cross.

The heath workers have been on strike April 17 in protest over poor welfare and unsettled allowances.
