JOHESU strike: Members stage protest in Calabar

Members of the Joint Health Staff Union, (JOHESU) drawn from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar and other health institutions in Cross River on Wednesday staged peaceful protest at the National Industrial Court, Calabar.

DAILY POST reports that the protesters numbering over one hundred, who appeared in black with large banner, walked round major streets of Calabar before landing at the National Industrial court.

Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman, Senior Staff Association, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, Comrade Ken Bassey who is also secretary of JOHESU lamented the action of the federal government towards the Union.

“We are here for a peaceful protest in solidarity with the national leadership of our Union who are in court today to appeal the court injunction issued on our members to resume work.

“We are also here to show the world and to expose to the world, the state of health sector in Nigeria.

“Our grievances are many but basically we are asking for adjustment in our CONHESS salary structure as was done for the doctors in 2009 and 2014.

“Every worker in the health sector deserves equal happiness and we are saying that we are tired of the injustice and the bias in the health sector. The strike is indefinite,” he said.
