Jerry Gana’s claim of merger talks with us is false – NCP

The national chairman of National Conscience Party, NCP, Yunusa Tanko, has debunked that claim by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Strategy Review Committee headed by Prof. Jerry Gana that merger talks with several friendly political parties including the National Conscience Party (NCP) were ongoing.

Recall that during a visit of Prof. Jerry Gana and his team to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, they disclosed that merger talks were ongoing.

Tanko, however, denied the supposed merger talks between his party and Jerry Gana’s committee during a chat with the media.

He said that the NCP identity was sacrosanct, and will never be subjugated to any other political party, especially when they do not share similarities in ideologies.

The NCP chairman stressed that Jerry Gana’s committee visited the founder of the Peoples’ Redemption Party (PRP) Balarabe Musa to discuss how to defend Nigeria’s democracy which, according to him, is threatened by a looming anarchy.

He noted that the connection with NCP could have been due to the relationship between PRP and NCP, stressing that NCP has neither directly met nor discussed with the PDP for a possible alliance.

Tanko said: “No, there’s never been a merger talks with the PDP in the history of NCP.

“Merger and alliance are two different things. For a merger, it means you subjugate your name and ideology to another party.

“The NCP identity is sacrosanct. We can never merge with any political party, especially when we do not even have the same ideological leanings. Alliance with the PDP has not even been discussed.

“This is what transpired: The Peoples’ Redemption Party (PRP) founded by Balarabe Musa and the NCP are like twins; maybe, because of the personal relationship between the late Gani Fawehinmi and Balarabe Musa. And of a truth, some of our ideologies are the same.

“Jerry Gana’s committee, in fact, visited Balarabe Musa and what was discussed was how to defend democracy, because Nigeria’s democracy is in danger – anarchy is looming.

“NCP has not met with the PDP, we have not discussed – nothing whatsoever – not even with PRP. Nobody has done anything on merger with the NCP.

“NCP remains as a brand name for the Nigerian people. If we must align with any political party, it must be based on the programme for the Nigerian people and the Nigerian youths – a blueprint that will provide for the welfare of the people and defend democracy.”
