Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Tuesday said INEC will overcome all challenges facing the Commission before the start of the polls in February 14.
He further stressed that the body will ensure that the coming elections is far better than that of 2011.
Jega said this at his quarterly meeting with political parties at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where he noted that the Commission was poised not only to conduct a free and fair election but to also ensure a credible polls.
The INEC boss said: “I want to use this opportunity to assure all of you that as we promised Nigerians, we are working assiduously to ensure that we prepare adequately and that we conduct elections that are free, fair, credible and peaceful.
“I want to also assure you that we are committed to ensuring that the elections we will conduct will be remarkably very much better that those we conducted in 2011.
“We believe that even though there may be challenges, such as the distribution of the PVCs, we feel confidently that with the measures and mechanisms that we have put in place, that these challenges are challenges that we can overcome. We shall overcome them well in advance of the conduct of the general elections.”
Jega affirmed that the parley was an opportunity for the Commission to provide the public an update on the preparation for this year’s general elections.
He called on all stakeholders to partner with the Commission in tackling the challenges currently facing the Commission, adding that Nigerians should exercise patience, with regards to PVCs distribution.
Also, he urged Nigerians to come out and collect their PVCs as it will help to reduce fraud in electoral practices.
