The immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has revealed that he remained calm while a former minister of Niger-Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, disrupted collation of election results because he and his staffers were resolute in making the 2015 elections credible.

Recall that on March 31 when results of the 2015 presidential election was being collated at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, some Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, officials led by Orubebe disrupted the exercise by accusing the former INEC boss of bias.

The ex-Minister went as far as seizing the microphone for minutes, insisting that the then INEC chairman was biased against the PDP and as such, should suspend announcement of result. However, Jega and his officials kept their cool all through the interruption.

But speaking with the quarterly magazine of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Zero Tolerance, Jega revealed that it was evident to him that some people were bent on derailing the process of collation of results by provoking him and his colleagues.

The former electoral chairman, who stated that all through the election period, there were various allegations against him but was not bothered or afraid, added: “So, we were determined to ensure that no matter the provocation, we would ensure that the results were tabulated and announced”.

Noting that no one who is afraid of death would want to be INEC chairman, Jega said: “Death is a necessary end. It comes when it will come.”
