Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Almakura, has proscribed the activities of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in the state, for “disruption” of Saturday’s Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams.
The union is accused of causing confusion during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Computer Based Test (CBT) as well as National Examination Council (NECO) examinations.
The announcement is contained in a terse statement on Sunday signed by the Head of Civil Service, Thomas Ogiri.
Al-Makura expressed anger that ASUSS activities not only posed a serious threat and danger to the educational development of the state, but could incite the people against the government.
“The union leaders kept issuing threats’ letters that disrupted the Saturday’s conduct of JAMB, NECO, MOCK, BECE (JSS3) examinations in the state,” the statement read. “Government has observed with dismay that the activities of ASUSS, an unregistered trade union was posing serious threats to peace and order in the state”, he added.
During the May Day celebration, former state chairman of ASUSS, Comrade Gabriel Angbashi said he was part of the creation of the state 20 years ago and will not allow any individual or government to truncate the objectives of the founding fathers for selfish political reasons.
Angbashi told workers that the present administration in Nasarawa has no reason for not paying workers, as it had received more allocations from the federal government than the previous administration.
He added that Nasarawa State government had vehemently refused to pay outstanding salary of August and shortfalls of October and November, despite the Paris Club refunds.
