Izon Elders express concern over ultimatum by Urhobo to Ijaws

The Izon Council of Elders in Delta on Wednesday expressed concern over the tension generated by the two weeks ultimatum given to Ijaws resident in Udu by Urhobo youths of Udu Local Government Area, Delta State.

A statement signed by the chairman of IZON Council of elders, Mr Bare Etolor and made available to DAILY POST in Warri, said “the council of elders expressed the concern following separate affirmation of the Udu youths’ ultimatum by Mr Joe Omene, President, Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) and Union of Udu Communities led by Mr Steve Sokoh.”

President General of Urhobo Progress Union, UPU World-Wide, Chief Joe Omene had in a statement on the crisis said the declaration of war on Udu villages by Isaba was a war against the entire Urhobo nation.

Also, Sokoh in his statement said they stood by their youths on the self help quit notice to Ijaws which would expired at the end of November.

”Among the conditions for reversing the ultimatum and the looming crisis, Sunday Obruche who was shot dead by the I jaws of Isaba must be properly buried ”Residents of the invaded communities being held hostage should be freed and the communities be rebuilt and displaced persons resettled,” Sokoh said.

Meanwhile, the elders have appealed to Urhobos and Ijaws to guard against inciting statements over the crisis noting that the Delta government was working with both parties to resolve the issues.
