Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, has hit back at comments made by the club’s CEO, Oscar Grau, that they won’t “go crazy” when negotiating an improved deal for Lionel Messi.
Grau said on Wednesday, that a new deal for Messi, was being negotiated with “common sense and discretion”.
“With Messi what you have to do is give him a new contract, not have common sense,” Suarez said after scoring in their 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.
Barcelona are not able to afford a new deal for Messi, despite posting a record turnover of 679 million euros ($719 million) last season.
New contracts for Neymar and Suarez, mean the Catalan club is close to overstepping the 70% limit of revenue to be spent on salaries, as stipulated by La Liga.
“I don’t know what the CEO said, but tell me one game in which Leo Messi hasn’t been decisive,” Barca coach, Luis Enrique, added.
“I don’t know about numbers, I know about football. We all want to enjoy watching Messi here for many more years, nothing else matters for me.”
