IPC calls for unconditional release of detained Ex-Daily Trust Editor

The International Press Center (IPC) has frowned at the continued detention of Ex-Daily Trust Editor, Dan-Halilu presently in the custody of the Department of State Service, as it called for his unconditionally release.

Recalled that Dan-Halilu was picked up by operatives of DSS in Kaduna over an alleged post on Facebook in support of the activities of #RevolutionNow.

The call was made in a press statement signed by IPC’s Director, Mr Lanre Arogundade, a copy which was made available to DAILY POST on Friday.

Arogundade in the statement condemned the arrest and noted that the continued detention of Dan -Halilu without trial by the security operatives was illegal and unconstitutional, thereby violating his right to freedom of expression and personal liberty guaranteed by Section 34, 35, 39 and 41 of the constitution and Article 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and peoples’ Right Act.

“The recurring developments underscore the remarkable fact that even after twenty years of ceaseless democracy, the government can still create subtle censorships to muzzle journalists and other independent voices at the faintest criticism.

“IPC therefore demands that all charges be dropped against all journalists arrested, detained and charged over the protest”, the statement reads.
