Intervene in herdsmen’s activities – Synod urges Buhari

The Seventh Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese of Niger Delta North has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to wade into the ceaseless attack on innocent Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen.

The call was part of the President of the Synod, Most Reverend Ignatius Kattey’s message at the third session of the Synod while delivering his presidential address and archbishop’s charge at the Saint Silas’ Anglican Church, Eneka Deanery in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Kattey, lamented that Fulani herdsmen had resorted to killing and displacing communities in some parts of the country while searching for grazing field for their cattle.

He cried out that in the presence of the hardship some part of the country was going through due to the activities of the Boko Haram terror group, the Fulani herdsmen had embraced the killing, maiming and raping of women.

“While the nation is still grappling with the Boko Haram terror group recently adjudged the world’s deadliest terror group, including ISIL, Al-Shabab, etc, we have now been awakened to the recent emergence of Fulani herdsmen, who have now taken to sacking communities in some parts of the nation, killing many, maiming and raping women everywhere they carry out their dastardly acts.

“We seize this medium to call on the Federal Government to rise up to quick action in addressing the attacks by Fulani herdsmen for the avoidance of what might appear in some quarters to become another civil conflict situation if it remains unchecked,” Kattey said.

He, however, commended the courage and bravery of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ability in combatting the problem of terrorism.

On the nation’s current economic situation, Kattey expressed optimism that Nigeria would have solutions to her teething problems.

He lamented that the earnings of the citizens were sliding gradually to a lower worth following the free-fall of the naira in exchange to other global currencies, adding that the development was causing low standard of living.

He said that, “God shall rise upon our situation and give us new ideas beyond our common dependence on crude oil. There shall be diversification of the economy towards several other areas that will create a new lease of life to our economy.

“We therefore call on our young people here and everywhere to begin to identify with issues of the common good of the country.

“Our youths should engage their hands on new and trending trade in newly identified and diversified areas of agriculture, information communications technology, education, among others.”
