The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council Chief, Smail Chergui on Monday said that donors at the African Union summit pledged the sum of $250m for the fight against Boko Haram insurgency.

Speaking at the close of the AU summit at Addis Ababa, Chergui praised the success of the military in the fight against terrorism.

He said, “Great results have been achieved and we must consolidate these gains.”

Chergui revealed that $110m came from Nigeria, while the European Union offered €50m, as well as donations from Britain and Switzerland.

The continuous bombardment of Boko Haram sect by the military in Nigeria, has caused some of the insurgent groups to spread to other countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon, which has become a major concern for African leaders.
