Insecurity: National Assembly complex no longer safe – Reps

Members of House of Representatives on Wednesday after a debate under the motion of urgent national importance declared the National Assembly complex unsafe.

This assertion followed the brazen manner with which armed gunmen attacked military and police facilities in Jaji and Abuja within 24 hours, killing at least 20 people.

The lawmakers speaking in a debate led by Hon Abubakar Momoh said with the level of insecurity in the country, no place was safe.

Momoh also cited the incident of Tuesday’s robbery in Auchi, Edo State which claimed the lives of three soldiers, policemen and civilians.

Also speaking, Hon Raphael Nnanna said the successful attack on the headquarters of Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS)Abuja clearly shows that security agencies cannot provide adequate security for the citizens.

He said: “The state of insecurity in the country has reached an embarrassing level. What happened in Jaji and SARS headquarters is embarrassing to the leadership and people of this nation”.

“I see these people coming to the National Assembly very soon.”

Hon Jerry Alagbaso who also spoke on the issue urged security agents to do more on intelligence gathering. He asked the government to provide sophisticated arms and gadgets to the country’s security agencies.

“Government must improve the sophistication of arms that our security agents use, that is the only way they can overcome the current challenge and our security must improve on intelligence gathering”.

The alarm raised by the lawmakers is a pointer that the security situation in the country has deteriorated
