The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its readiness to prosecute electoral offenders involved in multiple registration in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.
The poll is scheduled for November 16.
INEC says since all the political parties have reviewed their code of conduct, sanitising the electoral environment would be easier.
“We will keep on reforming the electoral process, it said.
INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, who spoke on Wednesday evening in Abuja during a courtesy call on him by a coalition of youth organisations, noted that it would not allow “addendum registration in the 2015 general elections and we have started it with Anambra election.”
Jega said: “We are going to commence prosecution of offenders who violate voter registration processes.
“We have already instructed our legal unit to commence prosecution of electoral offenders in Anambra State with regard to multiple registration during the voter registration exercise.”
The INEC boss further stated that the non-prosecution of those involved in the 2011 post-election violence was laxity on the part of security agencies.
“What happened was post-election violence, it is within the purview of security agencies,” he said.
“The violence didn’t take place during election. It’s therefore not within our purview. It’s the responsibility of security agencies.
He disclosed that INEC will soon launch nationwide voter registration to update what was issued in the 2015 election.
Jega regretted that politicians who do not mean well for the country have always engaged youth in bad things, adding that “we have always warned them not to stereotype Nigerian youth to assist them in the propagation of their selfish agenda.”
