INEC fixes Saturday for conduct of outstanding elections in Rivers

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday scheduled Saturday for the conclusion of the outstanding elections in Rivers State.

INEC resident electoral commissioner in the state, ‎Aniedi Ikoiwak, made the disclosure in a statement he issued in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Ikoiwak disclosed that the pending exercise would hold in Etche and Omuma local government areas of the state.

The statement quoted the REC as saying the poll was to fill the Etche constituency II seat in the house of assembly and Etche/Omuma seat in the house of representatives.

He stated that election would hold in 147 polling units in 19 registration areas in Etche and one polling unit.

The statement said, ”The commission assures the public of a credible and fair conclusion of the election in Etche local government area.”

He noted that adequate arrangement had been made for security during the exercise.

The commission’s decision to conduct the poll followed court rulings which invalidated the 2015 federal and state legislative elections in the state.

INEC had scheduled the poll for March 19, 2016, for rerun poll but the exercise was marred by violence, which forced the commission to call off the election.
