Barely two weeks after the Independent National Electoral Commission deregisterd 28 political parties, the Commission has once again thrashed three more political parties from the nation’s political scene.
The ‘hammered’ parties include: African Renaissance Party (ARP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and National Transformation Party (NTP).
INEC made this known on Friday night in Abuja through a statement issued by its Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama.
He said: “the action was in continuation of the exercise of the powers conferred on it by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).”
According to him, the composition of the National Executive Committees of ARP, NDP and NTP failed to meet the requirements of Section 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended).
He also added that there is no headquarters of the three delisted parties contrary to Section 222(f) of the 1999 Constitution.
He stated further that the affected parties “have not won a seat in the national and state assemblies,”
Buttressing his point , Kaugama added that: “The commission reiterates its commitment to relating with all registered political parties as specified by the extant laws of the land.”
The Commission Chairman, Atahiru Jega had declared earlier that there was no going back on the commission’s decision to deregister more political parties for failing to meet INEC’s requirements as clearly stipulated in the 1999 constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act.
